1968 Shelby GT500 KR Convertible

Lot No. 577

Auctioned on Saturday, March 17, 2012

High Bid of $137,500

The new-for-1967 Mustang body-shell was designed from the outset to accept the larger Ford FE-Series 390-cid big-block engine. With Shelby American fitting a Ford Interceptor 428-cid engine into the pony car engine-bay, the foundation for the GT500 was established. The new car offered heightened levels of luxury and refinement. The 1968 GT500 was comprehensively updated with an aggressive new front-end treatment including a lengthened hood-line, dual air-scoops and louvered cooling vents. A neatly integrated rear spoiler was added, as well as revised head and tail lamps. Inside, a neatly covered roll-bar with inertia-reel shoulder-belts was added; for the first time handsome convertible variants of both the GT350 and top-line GT500 appeared. It is considered by many to be the most visually imposing muscle car of the time.

The 428-cid, 360-hp GT500 is already very impressive, then Shelby unleashed the GT500KR “King of the Road” with a 428-cid Cobra-Jet engine that was suspiciously rated at only 335 horsepower, but in fact pumped out at least 400 horsepower. Many speculated that this was an attempt to appease insurance company rates. The Cobra-Jet engine included low-riser heads along with a beefier crank, rods and pistons. Additionally, the GT500KR has larger brakes, under-hood suspension bracing and staggered rear shocks to prevent axle wind-up and wheel hop.

This beautiful Dark Green Metallic Shelby being offered is one of only 318 convertibles built in 1968. It features a black powered top and interior and features a glass rear window. Power steering and brakes, ram-air hood, die-cast aluminum valve covers and optional cast-aluminum Shelby 10-spoke wheels complete the look of one of the most powerful and famous Shelbys of all time.
